Francis Kirby of Fulton County killed by Fredrick Slaton on April 24, 2009

An Atlanta woman was hit and killed early Friday April 24,2009 by an illegal driver in southwest Atlanta, police said.

Francis Kirby, 52, was killed instantly, Fulton County medical examiner’s officials said.

Kirby was crossing Metropolitan Parkway in the 2600 block shortly after 5 p.m., when she was hit by a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, police spokesman James Polite said.

The driver, 36-year-old Fredrick D. Slaton, had a suspended driver’s license and the “taint of alcohol,” Polite said.

“Slaton was believed to be under the influence of [an] alcoholic beverage at the time of the accident,” Polite said, after Slaton was given an alcohol breath analysis at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Slaton has been charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, two counts of DUI and driving with a suspended license, authorities said.
