Georgia State Soccer Player Killed in Underground Atlanta Crash

A former member of Georgia State University men’s soccer team was killed early Wednesday when he lost control of his car and crashed through the front of an Underground Atlanta ice cream parlor.
Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said Timothy Nixon, 21, was southbound on Peachtree Street around 2:30 a.m. when, “for reasons unknown at this time,” he lost control of his vehicle in a curve.  The car left the roadway, jumped a curb and struck two large planters and a trash can before coming to rest on its side inside the Haagen-Dazs store at the corner of Peachtree and Upper Alabama streets.  Jones said Nixon was trapped inside his car, and had to be extricated.  He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Pickup Truck Carrying 13 People Wrecks in Georgia

The driver of a pickup truck — with 5 minors riding in its bed — that crashed on the Downtown Connector has been charged with traffic and child restraint violations.
The 1999 Dodge 1500 struck a guardrail on I-75/85 northbound near the Spring Street exit just before 10:30 a.m.  Eight passengers  riding in the bed of the truck, covered by a camper shell, were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, a Georgia State Patrol spokesperson said. Their ages were 5, 6, 7, 14, 17, 18, 19 and 20.  Gordy Wright, a spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol, said their injuries did not appear to be life threatening.  Five people were inside the cab, including a 1-year-old and a two-year-old. Wright said the children were riding in restraint systems, and nobody in the cab was injured.  The driver, 40-year-old Jack Roger Rozsos, was cited for crossing a gore or median and five counts of child restraint violations. The law prohibits passengers under the age of 18 from riding unrestrained in the bed of a truck.  The group consisted of two families from Plant City, Fla., Wright said. They were on the way to the Georgia Aquarium when the crash occurred.

Two Police Officers Hit by Fleeing Suspect

Two Roswell police officers escaped serious injury overnight when a suspect in a domestic dispute struck them with his vehicle.
Roswell police Lt. James McGee said that just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers were dispatched to an apartment complex on Preakness Drive after a juvenile told police dispatchers that his mother’s boyfriend would not leave the residence.  The boyfriend had left by the time officers arrived, but while they were there, he returned and parked his late-model Saab in front of the apartment.  ”The officers approached the vehicle, as the driver matched the description of the boyfriend they had received earlier,” McGee said. “The driver was instructed to turn off his vehicle.”  The suspect complied, but a short time later, he started the car and drove forward, “striking one of the officers, putting him on the hood of the vehicle,” McGee said. “The driver then put the vehicle in reverse, striking the second officer by running over his foot.”  The suspect, identified as Keon Ryan Patterson, fled the complex, but was stopped by police and arrested a short distance away at a Waffle House on Holcomb Bridge Road.  Patterson, 32, of Hixson, Tenn., was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a firearm, obstruction, fleeing and driving with a suspended license.  The two officers were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Georgia Mother Driving Drunk With Children

Lawrenceville police credit a good Samaritan with helping them catch a woman who allegedly was driving drunk with her two small children in her vehicle.  Another driver spotted a maroon Chevrolet Trailblazer driving erratically on Buford Drive at 10 p.m. on Memorial Day, police said. The witness called 911, telling police the SUV was swerving all over the road.  ”Fortunately, he was concerned enough that he stayed with the vehicle until we could get an officer to catch up to it,” Capt Greg Vaughn of the Lawrenceville Police Department reported.
Police said they stopped the SUV on Scenic Highway, and Tonya Ann Buice was driving. According to a police report, the responding officer also saw two children, ages 4 and 7, in the back in child safety seats, and smelled a strong odor of alcohol.   Read the rest of this entry »
